The Causes of Societal Discrimination against Religious Minorities in Christian-Majority Countries

Using the Religion and State-Minorities WVS datasets, this study examined impact of religiosity in Christian-majority countries on societal religious discrimination (i.e., by non-state actors) against minorities. We found that increased levels activity commitment a country lead to less Muslim Jewish minorities but more Christian offered two explanations for complex relationship. First, when nations hold high religiosity, other Abrahamic religions are potential allies fight secularism. Second, religiously active nations, majority religion views (rather than Jews Muslims) as an unwanted competitive threat because denomination switching is common within same tradition.
